Director of Ohrstrom Library, St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH

St. Paul’s School announces a search for an experienced and creative professional to serve as Director of Ohrstrom Library (http://library.sps.edu/). This full-time, full-year faculty position beginning in July 2016. The Library Director reports to the Dean of Curriculum and Teaching and is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of all aspects of the Library’s programs and services. The Library Director leads a staff of 3 MLS librarians and 4 library assistants; prepares and monitors the annual budget; participates actively in collection development, reference and instructional services; serves as the Library’s principle liaison to other School departments; and participates in other areas of boarding school life.

OHRSTROM LIBRARY:  Designed by architect Robert Stern, Ohrstrom Library opened in 1991 and is located at the heart of the school grounds. The Library serves students, faculty and staff seven days and evenings a week during both the regular academic year and the annual Advanced Studies Program summer school. The Library is fully automated and provides a technology-rich environment for patrons.  The Center for Innovative Teaching is located in Ohrstrom Library.  Collections include numerous online databases, approximately 65,000 circulating print and non-print holdings, 190 serials subscriptions, and the school’s archives. With seating for 250 on three levels totaling 32,000 square feet, Ohrstrom Library provides a welcoming physical space for individual study and reflection, for both formal and informal group learning, and for occasional informational, celebratory, and ritual gatherings serving broader school needs.

St. Paul’s School is a completely residential, co-educational secondary school in Concord, NH, affiliated with the Episcopal Church and welcoming to all faiths. The School aggressively seeks applications from candidates who will promote a commitment to attracting and retaining a highly talented and diverse faculty.  All faculty at St. Paul’s School are responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising, dormitory association, coaching, committee work and other duties.  As part of a residential boarding school, the candidate must embrace the St. Paul’s School boarding culture and bet interested in working and living with adolescents.

POSITION INFORMATION:

  • The Director will be a dynamic, innovative person who is both knowledgeable and deeply thoughtful about the relationship between education and the modern library.
  • The Director will work closely with the Archives team in planning the collection, organization, and preservations of School history, in addition to the building of an increasingly robust digital presence.
  • The Director will articulate a clear vision for the Library, and bring about the fulfillment of this vision through strong leadership and management skills, assuming a leadership role both at the School and in the national conversation about such matters.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution required; additional Master’s degree in an academic field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to develop and oversee implementation of both traditional and emerging, innovative technologies to enhance library services.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience that has successfully promoted teamwork among librarians, staff, and the School Community.
  • A progressive outlook and an ability to handle increasing fast paced change in library functions.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral, and proven ability to work with a wide range of constituents.

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WITH EXPERIENCE IN: 

  • A college or boarding school setting with decentralized library services.
  • Qualitative research
  • Information literacy and initiatives related to scholarly technology, communication and services
  • Multiple mediums, especially film

SALARY:  Salary is competitive and based upon experience.
