Youth Services Branch Supervisor, Worcester Public Library, Worcester, MA

Join a dynamic team providing Library services throughout the Worcester community through our One City One Library branch locations. The Worcester Public Library is seeking candidates for the position of Youth Services Branch Supervisor

This paraprofessional position, reporting to the Youth Services Branch Manager and under the overall direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, is responsible for supervising the daily operations of assigned branch libraries and providing exemplary customer service for the Once City One Library locations. The ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse populations in an urban community, and have excellent interpersonal, communication, and public library service experience.

SALARY: 

$18.84 – $23.35 hourly

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises the daily operations of assigned branch libraries
  • Provides exemplary customer service
  • Assists library users in the selection, organization, location and circulation of library materials
  • Performs other tasks necessary for the circulation of materials and including the use of electronics
  • Trains personnel, assists with evaluating performance, assigns duties and work schedules
  • Coordinates selection of library materials with Youth Services Branch Manager and Youth Services Librarians
  • Assists with planning and conducting innovative library and outreach programs
  • In conjunction with supervisor and staff, evaluates existing operations and initiates new services
  • Develops and maintains awareness of neighborhood youth libraries’ needs  
  • Establishes and develops positive and effective school and community relationships
  • Prepares displays, signs and other public information related to services at the branch libraries
  • Interprets library services and policies to customers in a clear and courteous manner  
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory service, programming and other support, as assigned  
  • Participates in staff training and development opportunities  
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, consistent with the functions of the work units and level of responsibility

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS FOR PERFORMING ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with all staff at every level.  
  • Ability to communicate well with people from different cultures

  • Ability to push book carts and bins loaded with library materials
  • Ability to stand and or sit for prolonged periods of time  
  • Ability to perform bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, and twisting  
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm motions for prolonged periods of time  
  • Ability to reach and retrieve library materials at high and low shelf heights
  • Ability to move or lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and correct usage of the English language including grammar, punctuation and spelling

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor Degree or 5 to 10 years experience in a Youth Development field.

Experience: Two to three years of library experience, including one year of direct service to the public; supervisory experience is preferable.

Schedule: Includes evening and weekend assignments and regularly working at other locations.

Travel: Ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner. A valid drivers license is required.

CORI: Must pass a Criminal Background check.

Other: Bilingual and experience with an integrated library system, such as Evergreen ILS, is highly desirable.
