Rare Book Cataloger, Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA

Harvard Divinity School is currently seeking a Rare Book Cataloger to assist in an ongoing backlog project of the Andover-Harvard Theological Library. This is a Less than Half Time (LHT – works less than 17.5 hours per week) term position that ends June 30, 2016. This role reports to Curator of Historical Collections. The successful candidate will provide and enhance access to a collection of ca. 1500 early printed works. The collection is composed primarily of theological works (emphasis on continental Reformation history) printed before 1800. The bulk of the collection is German, Dutch, or Latin.

Position Duties:

  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging of printed materials in multiple languages in accordance with national and local standards for rare book description.
  • Verifies names, titles, and subjects in appropriate authority files; may contribute authority records locally or through NACO funnel.
  • May assign Library of Congress Classification numbers.
  • Records copy-specific information for each item including relevant provenance and/or binding data.
  • Communicates about project regularly with other library staff; maintains statistics and documents project history.
  • Works with Curator to establish and implement efficient project workflows.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Experience in cataloging is required. However, the successful candidate may either be an experienced rare book cataloger, or possess a combination of experience in rare book cataloging and specialized language and subject knowledge.

This position is a Less than Half Time term position.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MLS or advanced study in theology, history, or related field
  • Experience cataloging using DCRM(B) or DCRB
  • At least 1 year of related work experience in cataloging (library or in book trade)
  • Experience working in OCLC
  • Experience in MARC21 for bibliographic and holdings records
  • Working knowledge of German, Latin, or Dutch

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience cataloging using RDA
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with other project stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and communicate about project deadlines
