Director, Palmer School of Library and Information Science, New York, NY

Title: Director of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science and Associate Dean, College of Education, Information, and Technology

Job Duties: The Palmer School of Library and Information Science seeks a visionary leader who will lead the refining of the School’s vision and the implementation of already initiated transformational change in the School’s programs and practices. This includes, but is not limited to, articulation of re-envisioning the Palmer School as an integral element of an LIU iSchool. Working collaboratively with the Palmer School faculty, staff, students, and other key constituents, the selected candidate will lead the design and development of opportunities to improve the overall standing and reputation of the School, enhance pedagogical practices, and promote research and scholarship across the School’s constituents. As a member of the Dean’s leadership team, this individual also provides strategic guidance in support of Palmer’s vision and CEIT’s overall mission. This position presents a unique and exciting opportunity to work with diverse populations in a dynamic, multicultural environment in metropolitan New York City.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Explore and lead implementation of a transformational vision for the Palmer School within an articulated time frame.
  • Lead the creation of new and the revision of existing programs within the Palmer School and across the College of Education, Information, and Technology.
  • Manage ALA accreditation and other assessment protocols (including outcomes assessment) in conjunction with Palmer faculty and staff, and CEIT and University administration.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach in the field to meet with stakeholders and other constituents
  • Oversee the Palmer School’s hiring efforts of full-time and adjunct faculty by serving as an Ex officio member of the School’s Personnel Committee.
  • Develop and oversee the budget for the Palmer School.
  • Work closely with the Palmer School’s Advisory Board in support of transformation and change
  • Supervise all professional and clerical staff members in the Palmer School.
  • Serve as the central point of contact for students.
  • Manage enrollment and support the recruitment of students by overseeing the development of recruitment and admissions strategies, materials.
  • Maintain an active presence in the regional and national professional communities
  • Travel to other locations (e.g., LIU Palmer sites in Manhattan and Brentwood and other relevant sites) regularly.

Qualifications: Earned doctorate degree in a relevant field of study and scholarly qualifications appropriate for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Experience operating within higher education at the administrative level; demonstrated record of achievement in academic scholarship, teaching and service; strong knowledge of the information professions, the iSchool model, and current changes within LIS education; proven leadership skills, including the ability to collaborate with faculty in the achievement of academic and administrative goals and demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Special Information: The Palmer School offers Masters of Science programs in Library and Information Systems. In addition, it offers a unique Ph.D. program in Information Studies that prepares individuals to assume leadership positions in research, teaching and in practice.
