Evening and Weekend Outreach & Reference Librarian, Newbury College, Brookline, MA

Reports to: Director of Library Services

Job Classification: 12 Month Professional

Educational Requirements: MLS from ALA accredited program

General Responsibilities:

  • Has primary responsibility during weekends and one weekday evening for assisting undergraduates, graduate students and faculty members with library navigation and use of online catalog and electronic resources.
  • Develops LibGuides and other research aids.
  • Performs administrative-related tasks in reference services as required.
  • Provides support to weekend and evening managers with student supervision, resolution of patron issues, facilities problems, etc.
  • Reports any patron or staff problems/issues to supervisor. Recommends weekend and evening service improvements.
  • Assist in providing a dynamic and caring educational environment
  • Assists in collection development, cataloging and processing.

Specific Duties:

  • Presents occasional weekend library instruction sessions.
  • Coordinates and trains Federal Work Study Student employees.
  • Tracks usage statistics
  • Participate in overall Library planning and development
  • Staff Library Service Desk if necessary
  • Other assignments as needed

Schedule:  Monday- Thursday 2:00pm to 10:00pm.  Sunday: 11:00am to 7:00pm

Requisite Skills:

Experience with Microsoft operating systems (Window 95/98/NT/2000) and Microsoft Office productivity software; working knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, CGI, SSI, UNIX, Web authoring tools (Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Acrobat), image editing tools (Adobe Photoshop), Web copy editing. Able to rapidly learn new technology tools and platforms. Able to manage multiple projects, work under pressure, and meet deadlines. Adaptable, reliable, performance-oriented. Well-versed at conveying technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Strong service orientation; able to deal with a diverse clientele with courtesy and tact. Familiarity with print and online reference resources. Experience in teaching library skills classes or giving library presentations. Excellent oral and written communication / interpersonal / presentation / problem-solving /organization skills.  Able to relate to all levels of management and to work directly with users with varying degrees of computer knowledge.
