Library Director, Oak Bluffs Public Library, Oak Bluffs, MA

The Town of Oak Bluffs on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, seeks innovative, enthusiastic and qualified candidates for the position of Library Director.  Working under the direction of the Board of Trustees and the Town Administrator, the Director will provide leadership and direction in overseeing the daily operations of the library encompassing financial planning; hiring, supervision, discipline of library staff; property management; public relations, and collection development.

In collaboration with the Trustees, the Director will lead in the execution of strategic planning and initiatives for the future of the library. Responsibilities are: maintenance of a high level of library services including providing patron orientation training and professional development opportunities to Library staff; preparation and administration of the annual budget; grant writing and management of trust funds; overseeing maintenance and function of the library facility; cultivation, digitization and expansion of library collections. 

The Oak Bluffs library is a vibrant part of the island community and the Director will be responsible for promoting and enhancing outreach services, through developing and tailoring educational and cultural programs that suit all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Candidates must have a working knowledge of information and library technologies with proven ability to interpret growing trends in the library profession and apply them on the local level. A comprehensive knowledge of state laws relating to library operations and strong interpersonal oral and written communications skills are essential; promote team building and collaboration with staff; must have the ability to advocate for the library in a public setting.

A candidate for this position should have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school; three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in professional library work, including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility at a public library or equivalent combination of education and experience.  A candidate should be able to obtain certification from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $64,101 – $78,843 (commensurate with experience and education) plus comprehensive benefits package.
