Library Director, Emily Williston Memorial Library, Easthampton, MA

The Public Library Association of Easthampton is seeking creative and energetic candidates for its full-time, 40 hour-per-week Library Director position. The Library Director is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the library, the financial management of the library, and ensuring that the library meets the needs of the community as well as regularly reporting to the Public Library Association and enforcing library policies put in place by the Association.

The Emily Williston Memorial Library and Museum is a small but busy public library located in beautiful Easthampton, MA. Easthampton is an innovative, growing arts community that attracts visitors from across the country with popular programs like our monthly Art Walks as well as special annual events such as the Easthampton BookFest and Cultural Chaos. Easthampton is located in the Pioneer Valley which offers a wide variety of cultural events as well as outdoor recreation opportunities. The library is located in a beautiful building on the National Registry of Historic Places built in 1881. The Emily Williston Memorial Library serves a community of approximately 16,000 with an operating budget of over $300,000 and 8.5 FTE staff.

Qualifications: A masters degree from an ALA-accredited program, three years of professional public library experience with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred. A Certificate of Professional Librarianship issued by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is required within the first two months of employment. Candidates are expected to be knowledgeable in library management, technology, personnel administration, library services marketing, financial management, and public relations.

Desired skills and experience for this position include:

  • Knowledge of library trends including emerging technologies and electronic resources
  • Experience developing and evaluating engaging programming tailored to the interests of the community
  • Competence in financial management from creating to managing annual operating budgets to applying for grants
  • Extensive experience with technology including but not limited to troubleshooting computers, updating computers, managing social media accounts, and working with WordPress
  • A strong customer service focus to ensure our patrons receive the best customer service
  • A strong yet flexible leadership style that empathizes communication and allows for effective working relationships
  • Proficiency in promoting, marketing, and publicizing library events, programs, collections, and services
  • Prior experience managing, evaluating, training, and hiring staff
  • Experience with collection development and collection maintenance
  • Experience with automated library systems
  • Superior oral and written communication skills

Salary: $43,000-$47,000
