Dean of Research and Learning Services, Northeastern University, Boston, MA

Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services creates a shared vision for how the Library meets the needs and expectations of its users, developing and providing user-focused library services that support research, teaching, and student success. The Associate Dean advances the implementation of a suite of programs and services to enhance information literacy, scholarly research, liaison partnerships, outreach, and targeted assessment. Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, the Associate Dean sets priorities, facilitates collaboration, and strategically advances library initiatives in these areas so that they align with and support the University’s distinctive mission. The Associate Dean joins a strong, innovative, and energetic Library leadership team that is committed to innovation, strategic alignment with the University’s academic plans, and the needs of the Library’s several constituent user groups.

The Associate Dean leads in creating and sustaining engagement-centered service models based on an extensive range of campus partnerships, user-oriented assessment, and a strong record of advancing information literacy and fluency. The position-holder inspires, guides and enables the work of 30+ staff (along with student workers) in the Departments of Research & Instruction, Access Services, and the Digital Media Commons, as well as Communications and Marketing, User Engagement, and Assessment teams. In a highly collaborative and increasing digitally-oriented environment, the Associate Dean works with a wide variety of campus partners including faculty, academic support services, student affairs units, and learning technologists to enrich the student experience and increase faculty productivity.

Qualifications:

  • Masters or doctorate in library or information science or other relevant discipline is required. An additional subject degree is desirable.
  • Minimum seven years of significant, relevant and progressively more managerial professional experience in research libraries. Candidates with a demonstrated record of research, publication, and professional accomplishment beyond their local institution will be preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in system-wide planning, oversight and administration.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the evolving role of research libraries, specifically of trends and issues in learning and research services, including effective use of technology in support of service innovation.
  • Ability to inspire and build trust, lead organizational change, empower professional growth, and engage colleagues in delivering user-centered services.
  • Evidence of excellent working relationships with faculty, students, library staff, and with other institutional partners.
  • Excellent and demonstrated leadership, planning, analytical, budgetary, supervisory, organizational and project management skills, as well as interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and collaborative skills for effectively communicating complex issues and perspectives to a wide range of constituencies.
  • A strong vision for the future of library public, reference, research and learning services and partnerships.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services joins a strong, forward-looking, and energetic Library leadership team that is committed to innovation, strategic alignment with the University’s academic plans, and the needs of the Library’s several constituent user groups. The Associate Dean leads a public services team of 30+ staff and a large contingent of student workers in creating and sustaining engagement-centered service models based on an extensive range of campus partnerships, user-oriented assessment, and a strong record of advancing information literacy and fluency. Areas of responsibility include Research and Instruction, Access Services, the Digital Media Commons, User Engagement and Assessment, and Communications and Marketing. In a highly collaborative and increasingly digitally-oriented environment, the incumbent in this position works with a wide variety of campus partners including faculty, academic support services, student affairs units, and learning technologists to enrich the student experience and increase faculty productivity.
