Reference Assistant, The Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans, LA

The Reference Assistant assists researchers visiting the Williams Research Center during service hours and provides reference assistance to remote patrons. This position provides advice and direction on research in New Orleans-related subjects. This position also facilitates rights and reproductions requests according to THNOC’s policies and procedures. Additionally, the Reference Assistant is central to ensuring the security and proper handling of collections material in the reading room.

The ideal candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or a related degree and two years of experience working in an archives, library or comparable position. The successful candidate should have extensive knowledge of New Orleans and Louisiana history and culture and a general knowledge of copyright and intellectual property laws. Considered candidates must demonstrate attention to detail, proficient computer skills, very strong writing skills, and proven customer service and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate must have the ability to understand and become knowledgeable of THNOC holdings and the ability to interpret and articulate this knowledge to others. Prefer a master’s degree in history, library science, or a related degree.

This is a full-time position working Tuesday through Saturday. The Reference Assistant reports to the Head of Reader Services.
