Elementary Reading Specialist & Coordinator, Norwell Public Schools, Norwell, MA

To lead the elementary faculty in developing and sustaining a clear, coordinated, and sequential program of study focusing on curriculum, instruction, and assessment as they relate to reading.

Reports to Executive Director for Instruction and Building Principal

Qualifications:

  1. Hold or be eligible for a Massachusetts license as Reading Specialis required;
  2. A Master’s Degree or higher in reading or related field;
  3. At least 7 years of successful classroom teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level;
  4. Training in Orton-Gillingham, Project Read, or Wilson Reading Program; and;
  5. Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by coursework, educational experience, school-level involvement, and/or system wide professional activities, and the interview process.

Resposibilitites:

  1. Work collaboratively with building-based support services to coordinate and maintain a responsive Tiered Systems of Support program at the elementary level;
  2. Lead grade levels in the gathering, analyzing, and interpreting of assessment data and subsequently plan appropriate responses;
  3. Maintain and analyze data relative to individual students’ responses to various reading interventions and statewide assessment systems;
  4. Advise, assist, and facilitate (as needed) with professional development for staff and provide mentoring, guidance, support, and promotion of best practices through non-evaluative classroom observation;
  5. Assist with the selection and induciton of new staff through interview teams, credential review, and participation in identified induction activites;
  6. Maintain productive and consistent communication with Building Principals, Assistant Principals, and the Executive Director for Instruction;
  7. Serve as a member of the Instructional Leadership Team and work collaboratively to discuss, plan, and-when needed-problem solve issues relative to curriculum and instruction;
  8. In collaboration with the Elementary Assistant Principal for Curriculum, attend and oversee monthly elementary curriculum meetings;
  9. Maintain records and reports as necessary to monitor student progress in the reading program and the Tiered System of Support program;
  10. Serve as a consultant to teachers regarding methods and materials appropriate to various levels of reading instruction;
  11. Support reading instruction in classrooms and, upon request of building principal or Executive Director for Instruction, help teachers improve their performance;
  12. Serve as a member of the Instructional Support Team (IST) and participate in individual case conferences as requested;
  13. Support the classroom teacher in planning for differentiated instruction to respond to students’ instructional needs (strengths and limitations), interests, adn learning preferences;
  14. Oversee schools screenings to determine the reading abilities of all students and to identify those needing more intensive support;
  15. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or designee.

Terms of Employment and Evaluation: In accordance with School Committee Policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It is understood that this position requires hours and/or days beyond the typical teaching schedule and school calendar.
