Library Collections Manager, Wheaton College, Norton, MA

Responsible for strategic development and management of Wallace Library information collections including: analysis and assessment of collections, centralized selection, and acquisitions. Applies knowledge of current issues and trends to collection management, access provision, and discovery services. Works with LIS leadership to develop policies and carry out tactical projects for maintaining/developing the Library’s collections.   Works closely with faculty to determine priorities for local collections.  Promotes alternatives to fee-based information resources such as open educational resources and open access publications.  Manages the library acquisitions budget.  Supervises the E-Resources/Serials Librarian and Acquisitions Assistant.

Examples of Responsibilities:

  • Creates assessment criteria for local collections (physical and digital)
  • Analyzes the use of local collections (physical and digital) using various tools and criteria
  • Develops collection development and management guidelines based on assessment and analysis activities
  • Meets with faculty to determine priorities for local collections
  • Implements collection management projects (such as collection weeding projects)
  • Investigates and promotes non-traditional information resources, including open educational resources and open access publications
  • Investigates consortial and other partnerships supporting the provision of scholarly information resources
  • Works with the Research & Instruction group to determine the most effective discovery tools for information resources (i.e. integrated library systems discovery layers; local website configuration)
  • Assesses gifts of books and other information resources
  • Manages a budget and negotiates with vendors for licensed resources.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or significant, relevant work experience in an academic institution;
  • Minimum 3 years experience with selection, analysis, and disposition of information resources in all formats in an academic library;
  • Experience with budget management and vendor/license negotiations;
  • Relevant professional experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, campus partners, vendors, consortia, and publishers;
  • Knowledge of library collection management trends and best practices, the publishing industry, electronic resource management, licensing, and discovery systems;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with automated library systems, usage tools and standards.
