Librarian I (Full-Time) – Teen Specialist, Waltham Public Library, Waltham, MA

Enthusiastic individual wanted to work in the library’s reference/information department in a busy, team-oriented MLN member library serving a diverse, urban community with an excellent collection of print, audio-visual and online resources.
Qualifications:
- ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science;
- More than 1 year computer/electronic database experience;
- 5 years’ professional library experience, preferably in a reference department, or any equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Strong interest and comfort in dealing with teens;
- Comfort and confidence in all matters of technology including experience with social media;
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library work;
- Ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public with wide ranging needs in a tactful and courteous manner;
- Ability to perform under pressure, including handling emergencies;
- Excellent communication, customer service and instructional abilities; extreme creativity.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check. Full description available at Personnel Department.
Preferred:
Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole or Portuguese and familiarity with III Sierra software.
Duties:
- Works under the direction of the Head of Reference, but also in conjunction with the Children’s Department.
- Responsible for Young Adult Room, collection, readers’ advisory support, programming, outreach and services;
- Liaison to Middle and High Schools and other teen-oriented agencies;
- Maintains library’s young adult web & social media presence;
- Serve the general public on adult Reference desk, either with a partner or alone;
- Provides assistance in locating information via all print and electronic resources in person and on the telephone.
- Assists patrons in troubleshooting personal computers, library OPACs and various other types of electronic equipment.
- Provides technology workshops; Contributes to adult collection development;
- Responds to patrons’ questions and concerns.
- Interprets and enforces library policies.
- Participates in Minuteman group(s) and other professional development workshops;
- Refers patrons to other departments and institutions as appropriate;
- Performs other duties at the discretion of supervisors.
35 hours per week including a minimum of one evening/week, plus at least one Saturday and Sunday/month, including July and August.
Starting salary: $34.35/hour and excellent benefits.
