Youth Services Coordinator, Worcester Public Library, Worcester, MA

The Worcester Public Library is seeking a highly talented and enthusiastic individual to join a newly formed team of leaders at an exciting, busy, and community-oriented urban public library in Central Massachusetts. The Youth Services Coordinator will oversee all aspects of the Youth Services Division including our award winning One City One Library Initiative. The Youth Services Coordinator will have a proven record of providing outstanding and innovative programs and services to our community’s diverse youth population and building positive and productive partnerships with community organizations. This position, under the direction of the Head Librarian, has responsibility for developing and leading new and expanded programs in a collaborative fast-paced environment providing quality user-centered services and programs that meet the needs of the Worcester community.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about their work, use creative problem-solving techniques, are comfortable balancing multiple perspectives, can multi-task, and easily adapt to new library technological skills and tools. It is important, therefore, that candidates genuinely enjoy youth and serving them.

Position Highlights

The Youth Services Coordinator will ultimately be responsible for overseeing three public library branches within public schools (soon to be four) and the Youth Services spaces at the Main Branch location, and fourteen full-time professional staff members in addition to:

  • Actively contributing to library-wide planning, policy making, goal setting, and development of new services and initiatives as part of the Library’s Senior Management Team.
  • Overseeing the development and selection of print and non-print materials and budget for the Youth Services Division.
  • Hiring, supervising, coordinating and evaluating Youth Services Division staff.

Youth Services Division Highlights

The Youth Services Division provides exciting programming, which includes special events and activities, storytimes, games, homework help, computer classes, seasonal programming, and an extensive summer reading program. The division includes children’s and teen programming in the Main Library, as well as programming at all One City, One Library branches.

The Successful Candidate Will

  • Have excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate with staff about concepts, ideas, and requirements.
  • Possess an enthusiastic commitment to ascertaining and delivering fun and engaging public services for youth of all ages.
  • Have strong leadership abilities, excellent problem solving, time management, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Have the ability to mentor, train and motivate staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Have the ability to take initiative and responsibility for the unit’s productivity.

Requirements

Requires a Master’s Degree in Library Sciences from a Graduate School of Library Sciences accredited by the American Library Association, or approved by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Five years of professional public library work after receipt of MLIS, including supervisory and public service responsibilities. Must pass a criminal background check.
