Metadata Project Management Consulting Position, Boston Library Consortium, Boston, MA

The Boston Library Consortium (www.blc.org) seeks an experienced project manager with archival background for a part time temporary position. The successful candidate will work with about a dozen BLC member libraries as those libraries prepare metadata for Digital Public Library of America ingest in conjunction with the Boston Public Library’s “Library of the Commonwealth” program. The position will serve as the liaison between the BLC member libraries, BLC administration and the staff of the Boston Public Library. 

Please note: Although demonstrated familiarity with metadata schemas and basic data management is required, this is an administrative, not a technical, position.

The project allows for flexible weekly hours based on the scheduling of meetings, which will vary from week to week. Compensation rate: up to $50/hour commensurate with experience. Benefits: none.  Maximum hours: 600 hours over a time period not to exceed 22 months.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Creates and manages project schedules, including scheduling and attending consultancy meetings between Boston Public Library staff and staff of individual libraries, bi-monthly SC COI meetings and project alignment meetings with BPL staff
  • Records detailed and technically accurate meeting notes of BPL assessments of the readiness and recommendations for improvement of metadata content for each library
  • Performs follow up research and contacts with BPL staff as necessary to clarify recommendations, tools or approaches from the sit-down consultancy sessions, delivering those notes as an action report to each Library
  • Follows up with Library staff on their planning process for the execution of the recommendations. 
  • Assists in identifying technical specialists as required to help member libraries to execute any recommended ctivities outside the scope of the BPL’s offerings (for example scripting or metadata crosswalks) and documenting those activities for the benefit of all BLC members.
  • Monitors milestone and completion dates; documents and communicates status through the BLC SC COI to the BLC Board. Communicates schedule changes that will affect project goals and deadlines
  • Provides quarterly reports on project status
  • Additional responsibilities as needed to achieve project goals.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in library science, technical communications, information technology or equivalent combination of relevant education and one year relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with descriptive metadata schemas and their implementation
  • Organizational agility and ability to gracefully support the varying needs of member institutions within the context of the project
  • Demonstrated experience working with the electronic management of data, metadata, and structured content in institutional digital repositories
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to manage project priorities and to meet project goals and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to document technical and production processes
  • Intermediate knowledge and use of MS Office applications, including spreadsheets, online databases, and word processing tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as diplomacy in articulating relevant information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, teamwork, organizational, time management, orientation to detail and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of various file content formats and experience creating technical documentation.
  • Ability to monitor work assigned to outside vendors.
