Consulting Archivist for 19th and 20th century Re-housing and Cataloging Archival Materials

The Curator of Collections is looking for a consulting archivist for work on an archival re-housing and cataloging project. The project, which is in the proposal stage as the Curator and Director of Development are compiling a grant application to submit by July 31, will be funded by the New York Preservation Archives Project. The materials to be re-housed and cataloged, with digitized images added to catalog database as time allows, include the following:

  • Newspaper and magazine clippings of site history and interpretation (1920s-90s)
  • Photographs of historic garden preservation (1950s-1970s)
  • Architectural drawings and reports during site restoration work (1970s-90s)
  • Photographs of site and neighborhood from 19th century through its preservation and interpretation under the Colonial Dames of America / professional Museum staff in the late 20th century (1880s-1990s)

The consulting archivist will be responsible for working with the Curator on re-housing the materials in archival storage so that they may be utilized by Museum staff, interpreters, outside researchers, and visitors to the Museum on special tours or public programs (with trained Museum staff handling the items). The archival items that record the site’s history and legacy of preservation will also be cataloged, digitized, and entered into the Museum’s PastPerfect database. The archivist will also consult with the Curator on establishing official archival policies appropriate to the size of the collection and Museum. Interested applicants are requested to contact Ruth Osborne, the Curator of Collections at [email protected] to inquire about the project and provide an estimate for their work to include in the budget line for the grant application.
