Head of Youth Services, Jones Library Inc., Amherst, MA

Duties/Description:

The Jones Library, Inc. in Amherst Massachusetts seeks a Youth Services Librarian to perform highly professional public library work; direct Library services and  collections for children and young adults; provide professional assistance in the use of materials and 
services; and participate in the overall policy-making of the Library.

Primary Duties include:

  1. Review and select print, non-print, and digital materials suitable for youth and young adult circulating collections.
  2. Oversee materials budget for print, non-print, and digital materials for youth and young adult circulating collections.
  3. Create displays and exhibits merchandising Library collections. Uses technology and social media to promote use of and access to Library collections and services.
  4. Perform professional reference services identifying appropriate resource materials and instructs on use of sources.
  5. Actively tracks developing technologies and delivery methods for materials that will affect the future of library services.
  6. Responsible for space-planning for youth services.
  7. Guide, supervise, direct and evaluate Youth Services staff and participate as a part of Library Management team.

Qualifications:

Requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Library Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association, and at least three years’ experience in library operations. Experience and genuine enjoyment in working with children and knowledge of and interest in children’s literature. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library collection development, selection tools and techniques. Knowledge of readers advisory techniques, reference tools, and resources. Expertise with current technology & library applications; ability to adapt to emerging technologies. Possess excellent supervisory, managerial, creative, budgeting and planning skills. Ability to work as a part  of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers, the general public, and partner agencies. Customer service oriented, skilled at communications with persons of diverse backgrounds.

Salary: $52,410-$67,089 plus municipal benefits package & pension
