Position Focus: The Irving S. Gilmore Music Library at Yale University is one of the largest collections of music scores, sound recordings and music research materials in the United States. The Music Librarian for Access Services provides leadership for all aspects of access services including circulation and course reserves, with particular focus on streaming services. Supervising the Circulation Supervisor and student desk staff, the Music Librarian provides leadership for resource sharing, collection maintenance, privileges and security. Working closely with staff in cataloging, systems, electronic collections and instruction, this individual develops and offers services providing digital access to resources in the Music Library as part of Yale University’s Digital Collections. The Music Librarian provides the subject matter expertise essential to creating and maintaining web-deliverable information, maintains the music library web site, and creates online instructional and research guides. In coordination with other Music Librarians and staff, this individual facilitates web design and content planning. The Music Librarian instructs and supports researchers and staff in the use of both the online databases and the superb paper-based collections. Working closely with public services staff in Music, the Music Librarian provides outreach to the School of Music, Department of Music and the Institute for Sacred Music and participates in the Personal Librarian Program, library planning committees and task forces. Likewise, the Music Librarian is actively engaged in campus organizations as well as regional, national and international professional organizations. Reporting to the Director of the Music Library, the Music Librarian works in a distributed and innovative environment with librarians, as well as technology, course support, and preservation experts both within the Music Library and other departments across campus. Specific assignments will be established with the Director of the Music Library through periodic goal setting and reviews.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications and analytical ability.
  • Demonstrated record of designing projects and bringing them to a conclusion in a timely fashion.
  • Experience working collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations.
  • Experience working collaboratively and independently with varied groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing, team environment.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in music. Minimum two years’ experience, preferably in an academic music library.
  • Demonstrated ability with management of digital resources, including streamed audio services, Libguides.
  • Reading knowledge of two or more Western European languages.
  • Experience with Drupal, HTML and XML.

The Irving S. Gilmore Music Library at Yale University is one of the largest collections of music scores, sound recordings and music research materials in the United States. The Music Library reflects the centrality of musical performance and scholarship to the University throughout its history. The library holds a wealth of materials for the study and performance of music including over 100,000 scores and parts, 70,000 books about music, 35,000 sound recordings and 425 active music periodicals subscriptions.
