Robinson Research Center Coordinator, Rhode Island Historical Society, Providence, RI

Overview:

The Rhode Island Historical Society seeks a new coordinator for the newly named and freshly renovated Robinson Research Center at 121 Hope Street in Providence. The successful candidate will help organize and manage many of the ways our researchers connect to our collections, while overseeing the daily operations of the Research Center facility.  The Research Center serves patrons from diverse backgrounds and offers programs and services for their variety of research needs – with scholarly research and genealogy being of particular interest.

The ideal candidate will understand the power of using material culture – and in particular manuscripts, graphics, film, and printed materials – to educate, inspire, and engage the public.  The successful candidate will want to be part of a team of history and library professionals who bring their expertise in a variety of fields to bear on our collections.

The Robinson Research Center Coordinator must have a passion for creating an environment of teamwork that embraces change and excellent patron service.  He/she must possess effective management skills and experience, as well as knowledge about the administrative and programmatic operations of a special collections library in an urban setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist patrons with a variety of reference and research questions using Research Center resources and services
  • Recommend new resources and acquisitions based on patron needs
  • Schedule public service staff to maintain positive and supportive environment for researchers and staff
  • Assist with Research Center programs and events as needed
  • Some weekends and evenings required
  • And other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • True excitement for American history and Rhode Island history and facilitating historical research
  • A Master’s degree in Humanities or Social Sciences, or MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program
  • Experience managing people and/or complex projects
  • Excellent computer skills including office tools, databases, and online resources
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check

Rate of Pay:

The starting salary is commensurate with job responsibilities and similar positions in the field; the compensation package includes paid holidays, vacation, and sick time; health insurance (medical, dental, and vision offered); long-term disability and life insurance program; pension.
