Adult Services/Technology Librarian, Medfield Memorial Public Library, Medfield, MA

The Medfield Memorial Public Library, located in a suburb of Boston, seeks a full-time professional librarian to offer services to adults including reference, reader’s advisory and programming as well as overseeing the library’s technology infrastructure. The library serves a community of 12,000 residents with robust circulation, programming and library services.  The successful candidate will help us realize our recently updated strategic plan, offering opportunities for creativity and innovation.

Primary Function

Plans, organizes, implements and oversees all aspects of knowledge and information services delivered traditionally and virtually. This includes the library’s technology equipment, networks, digital collections, communication via website, social media, and publications, outreach, community analysis and participatory learning programs and initiatives.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Virtual Library Services

  • Oversees digital collection development, database evaluation and procurement.
  • Maintains and updates the library’s website.
  • Develops and delivers notification of library programs and events through email marketing tools such as Constant Contact or Mailchimp.

Knowledge and Information Services

  • Oversees knowledge and information public service and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Evaluates online information, electronic databases and identifies cost effective ways to provide access.
  • Provides reference, referral and reader’s advisory services within the library and remotely.

Programs and Activities

  • Initiates, plans and conducts a variety of programs and activities to support the educational, vocational, recreational, social, and personal needs of adults.
    • Provides training and support for patrons using their own and/or the library’s technology.

Collections Management

  • Selects, classifies and maintains the adult non-fiction materials in all formats.
  • Selects Overdrive digital content.
  • Monitors material’s budget.

Outreach

  • Promotes and publicizes the library and its services through the library’s website, social media and local media outlets.
  • Encourages library use and ease of access in person and remotely.
  • Creates promotional materials to be distributed traditionally and virtually.

Internal Operations

  • Develops and implements the library’s technology plan.
  • Develops goals, policies and procedures related to virtual services, and knowledge and information services.
  • Trains and supports staff in their technology needs.
  • Stays informed regarding current issues and developments as they pertain to virtual library services and knowledge and information services.  Evaluates and recommends new technologies.
  • Coordinates with vendors and networks to support and maintain public service technologies.
  • Attends library conferences, training seminars and other events that will benefit the position.
  • Compiles, interprets and reports statistical data as needed.
  • Prepares regular management reports for review by the Library Director.

Building/Facility Support

  • Responsible for the maintenance of public computers and peripherals to ensure optimal performance at all times.
  • Acts as building supervisor when they are the most senior staff member on-site. Responsible for the safety of the staff, public, facilities and equipment.

Recommended Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and apply emerging technologies, equipment, software, and cloud computing.
  • Knowledgeable of current trends in library services.
  • Proficient in database research. Experience with ILS systems, computing and network concepts, hardware components and application software.
  • Must demonstrate initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to interact with people of varied backgrounds, education, abilities and ages with tact, respect and courtesy. 
  • Skilled in conflict resolution.
  • Must be able to remain calm and respond to emergencies as they arise.

Education and Experience:

Requires a Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution and 3 years public library experience with an emphasis on technology and service to adults.  

Supervision:

Works independently under the general direction of the Library Director. 

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing/and or pulling of objects, equipment and materials of moderate weight (30-50 lbs.).  Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.  Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.

This is a 37.5 hour work week to include at least one evening per week and Sundays.

Salary: $25.36/hr. to $32.22/hr. depending on experience.
