Director of Scholarly Information Resources, Wheaton College, Norton, MA

This position supports teaching and learning by managing services focused around the identification, acquisition, creation, curation, and publication of scholarly information resources. The successful candidate will have a firm grasp of current scholarly information available via print or e-publishing options while also focusing on new models of discovery, creation, curation, and access beyond ownership, including digitization, open access research, digital humanities archives, institutional repositories, institutional publishing, data mining initiatives, open educational resources (OERs), and consortial collaborations. This position works closely with faculty to encourage the use of traditional and evolving scholarly information resources.

This position is a member of the Leadership Team of Library and Information Services and will work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve goals and objectives.

Examples of Responsibilities:

Resource Development and Management:

  • Oversees the assessment, acquisition, and disposition of Scholarly Information Resources in all formats.
  • Facilitates the creation and publication of scholarly information assets by the Wheaton community.
  • Working closely with the College Archivist oversees the digitization, digital storage of and online access to unique and special Wheaton information and data resources.
  • Organizes and conducts resource management projects (assessment and disposition).

Access to Information:

  • Facilitates access to information resources whether or not owned by the College, working with the community and LIS staff to define discovery paths to data and information.
  • Oversees the creation of intellectual access (cataloging/metadata services) to Scholarly Information Resources in all formats, as well as to digital collections created and/or curated by LIS.
  • Oversees use and development of automated systems to facilitate access to information resources.
  • Oversees the Wheaton Institutional Repositories and works with faculty and students to publish scholarly works via the Wheaton platforms.
  • Collaborates with Research and Instruction liaisons, faculty, and academic departments and programs to ensure that Wheaton information resources are relevant and discoverable.
  • Creates partnerships beyond the College to support the creation, curation, and consumption of information resources.

Management & Supervision

  • Manages allocated budgets and restricted funds, including stewardship of named funds.
  • Manages professional staff members dedicated to providing access to our scholarly information resources and to creating and curating digital collections.
  • Manages vendor relations and negotiates licenses and contracts for information resources and services.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent degree;
  • Minimum 5 years experience leading a program or department in an academic library
  • Experience supervising staff in an academic library environment;
  • Experience with budget management and vendor/license negotiations;
  • Relevant professional experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, campus partners, vendors, consortia, and publishers;
  • Knowledge of collection management, the publishing industry, electronic resource management, licensing and copyright issues, digital rights management, digital preservation and discovery systems;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with automated library systems, usage tools and standards;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing selection, analysis, and disposition of information resources in all formats in support of an academic program.
