Assistant Library Desk Services Manager, University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston, MA

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Library Desk Services Manager (LDSM) the Assistant Library Desk Services Manager (ALDSM) provides leadership, direction, and directly supervises evening and/or weekend staff at the circulation desk, reserves desk, and the reference desk. In coordination with the LDSM, the ALDSM provides short and long term strategic recommendations and direction as needed as well as provides oversight over the services such as the Walk-In Interlibrary Loan Program for the Boston Library Consortium, Fenway Libraries Consortium, and MCCLPHEI as well as any other resource sharing and document delivery agreements the campus and/or the libraries engage on to promote access and excellent customer service. The ADLSM will also: recommend, as needed, changes in policies, procedures, job assignments, performs job reviews, and assists the LDSM in the fulfillment of his/her role; serve as a team member of the Library Desk Services Team, Remote Services Improvement Pilot, the Common Ground Pilot, and the One-Stop Pilot, all under development; serve as a member of the Reference Outreach and Instruction (ROI) unit; work with other library staff and stakeholders to ensure accurate, effective, and courteous service and referrals; develop and recommend policies, procedures, etc. to assure betterment of services to all eligible constituents, including those off-campus and those requiring accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, etc.; schedule staff and student worker hours in coordination with the LDSM, oversee all library evening hours if operation, including building and operations oversight; develop, implement, and oversee training for all staff and student workers in circulation, reserves, and reference desk, in coordination with the LDSM; maintains accounts receivables for circulation and reserves; promote and implement effective customer service day-to-day; coordinate professional development opportunities for staff and student workers in any of the current services and developmental activities; organize and manage major library projects, including space utilization and redeployment; collect, review and analyze metrics to assess resources and resource allocation in coordination with the LDSM; be responsible for library functions and services including, but not limited to, check in/out books, laptops, reserve materials and all other library materials, resolve users’ circulation, reserves and reference questions and problems, direct users to appropriate resources within the library and on campus, opening and closing the library as needed, staff the reference and circulation/reserves desk as needed, report building and customer problems to the appropriate campus agency as needed, notify other library staff and the public of emergency closings; prepare book trucks for re-shelving; shelve books and does shelf readings and maintenance, including inventories; receive and process fine payments and reconcile daily cash receipts as needed; process phone, mail and online requests for renewal of library materials; assist in maintaining good order in the stacks; make and correct stacks signs and labels; provide building count metrics, including various summary reports; prepare, process and ship Mass Virtual Catalog materials; prepare BLC proxy applications and cards; assume responsibility for the operation of the reference, circulation and reserve functions in the absence of a supervisor; and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

An American Library Association accredited Master in Library Science or Master in Library and Information Science is required. Supervisory experience with an excellent customer service track is highly desirable. One to two years of experience in a similar position in a professional capacity in a comparable academic setting is highly desirable.

  • Successful experience working with the public in a service capacity;
  • Physical ability to push heavy book trucks up to 65 lbs. and ability to retrieve, shelve or locate materials in book stacks or other locations in the library;
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources;
  • Ability to make independent and appropriate decisions in the absence of a supervisor;
  • Ability to implement library policies and procedures courteously and fairly;
  • Ability to use all necessary equipment, machinery and computer systems within the library;
  • Commitment to providing customers outstanding library services;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Punctuality and dependability are essential;
  • Ability to work the evening supervisory;
  • May be required to work occasional weekends.
