Archives Specialist, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston, MA

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is seeking an Archives Specialist to perform duties that include the acquisition, accessioning, arrangement, description, appraisal, screening, reference service, reproduction, digitization and preservation of textual and non-textual historical material.

  • Responsible for accessioning, housing and documenting acquisitions of personal papers and related materials.
  • Performs complex arrangement work on these collections.
  • Analyzes collection contents and develops plans for the arrangement of unprocessed collections.
  • Arranges collections in accordance with approved plans, locates missing or misfiled items, and conducts background research on to prepare finding aids and other inventories as needed.
  • During processing, identifies and withdraws documents that may be restricted for national security or other reasons.
  • Conducts searches for information in response to reference requests and prepares comprehensive replies to requests.
  • Assesses new accessions or materials already in custody for signs of deterioration and performs basic preservation measures on them.
  • Uses computer technology to prepare detailed finding aids, shelf lists, subject guides, inventories, registers, and item-level catalogs, as appropriate.
  • Digitizes archival materials and creates descriptive metadata for online access and researcher use.
