Senior Research Librarian, Gradient, Cambridge, MA

Position Summary

Gradient seeks a talented and experienced Senior Research Librarian for our Cambridge, MA office. The Senior Research Librarian works as part of a team to provide comprehensive research and information services to a national consulting staff of scientists and engineers using appropriate electronic, print, and other resources.The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills; ability to organize collections of materials and information; well developed and professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm; and strong communication skills, both written and verbal. In this role the successful candidate will be expected to apply his or her organizational and communication skills while displaying a positive, high-energy attitude.

Responsibilities

Research and Literature Searching

  • Responsible for conducting research to meet user information needs and support project work by utilizing various internal and external resources in the fields of toxicology, life and environmental sciences, business and government regulations.
  • Translate user information needs into effective search strategies
  • Review diverse sources of information for currency, reliability, relevance, and cost effectiveness to deliver a high-quality research product.
  • Perform Internet and online database searches in PubMed, Toxnet, Scopus, ProQuestDialog and other sources
  • Evaluate, analyze, synthesize and deliver research results effectively
  • Critical evaluation of new information products – initial research, vendor interaction, trial period, training, rollout

Current Awareness

  • Track and monitor scientific literature and regulatory developments in the company’s core practice areas
  • Work collaboratively with users to identify and define needs
  • Establish effective tracking strategies and systems
  • Disseminate the results through multiple channels including email and SharePoint
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of tracking systems and implement new solutions

Training

  • Conduct end-user training in print and electronic resources and research skills
  • Conduct orientation sessions on information resources and library procedures for new staff

Other

  • Assume key duties in the absence of IRC Manager, such as coordinating staff workload, adjusting timelines, setting priorities, leading complex information projects, handling urgent issues with users and vendors.
  • Participate in the design, planning and implementation of new information products or services
  • Work with IRC Manager on departmental projects and initiatives as requested (e.g. development of policies and/or procedures)
  • Support IRC’s activities and other tasks as assigned, such as secondary assistance for current awareness services, document management and document retrieval activities.

Experience

3-5 years experience in literature searching and research in a corporate or academic library; experience in an environmental health or science setting preferred.

Skills

Technical Skills

  • Broad knowledge of environmental health and science information resources (peer-reviewed literature, conference information, regulatory arena, government agencies, and document repositories)
  • Experience and ability to perform in-depth scientific, technical, regulatory, and general research using a variety of print and digital tools, including PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest Dialog.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in PC applications, including MS Office, DBTextworks, Adobe, and SharePoint

Communication/Collaboration

  • Excellent written, oral, and email communication skills
  • Confidence in presenting to groups of all sizes (and knowledge levels)
  • Proactive and willing to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks within a team environment, relying on extensive experience and independent judgment to plan and accomplish goals

Education

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited program.  B.S. in a science discipline preferred
