Summary

Springfield College is looking for a Processing Archivist to fully arrange, research, and describe our World War I and World War II records collections.  Materials on World War I mostly consist of correspondence from alumni who participated in World War I through the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and armed forces of various nations. There are also photographs and printed materials concerning YMCA War Work courses and the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) programs held at Springfield College. World War II materials mainly include correspondence, photographs, and printed materials concerning the use of the campus as both a training grounds for the Army Air Corps and as a US Navy Special Hospital for returning troops.  These are small but very important collections for our institution and the YMCA. As such, materials will be processed with complete digitization & sharing across institutions in mind.

Exact tasks involved would be:

  • Fully arranging, describing, and creating finding aids for the World War I and World War II collections.
  • Work with the Archives graduate and student staff to fully digitize the collection for inclusion in the College’s Digital Collection in CONTENTdm. Particular focus will be on preparing materials to be shared with the YUSA and the YMCA of England for future inclusion in 100th anniversary celebration events.
  • Work with Volunteers and students to fully transcribe all World War I letters. Work may involve coordinating with faculty and classes.
  • Input completed finding aids into Archivist Toolkit, developing workflows and written directions for both the input of future finding aids and a project to put all existing finding aids into Archivist Toolkit. 
  • Create stylesheets for EAD finding Aids for upload online either through current web applications, CONTENTdm, or ArchivesSpace (combination project of ARCHON and Archivist Toolkit).
  • Fully arrange, describe and create finding aids for additional College Records Collections as time allows.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion (or near completion) of a degree in Library Science with a focus on Archives Management from an accredited institution. 
  • 2 years’ experience in the description, arrangement and creation of finding aids for archival collections in an Archives and/or Museum setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of archival best practices, theory and standards, including those related to developing processing plans and creating finding aids.
  • Familiarity using DACS and working with EAD finding aids.
  • Experience working with Archivist Toolkit, including setting up finding aids and EAD stylesheets within the Archivist Toolkit Environment.
  • Skill in creation and maintenance of digital files in CONTENTdm or other Content Management Software.
  • Experience in the Dublin Core metadata standard.
  • Skill in written and oral communication and the ability to amicably deal with a wide variety of individuals.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity of the history of World War I and World War II.
  • Familiarity of the history of the YMCA.
  • Familiarity of the history and scholarship of Physical Education and Sport.
  • Knowledge of XML, XHTML and script writing.
  • Understanding of METS, MODS, and other metadata standards.
