Assessment Fellow for the Harvard Library Administrative Fellowship Program, Cambridge, MA

The Harvard Library is seeking an Assessment Fellow to help foster a culture of assessment within the library community at Harvard. The Assessment Fellow will participate in Harvard’s Administrative Fellowship Program which seeks to attract talented professionals, and in particular, members of historically underrepresented groups, to promote leadership opportunities and careers in higher education.

In its twenty-fifth year of operation, the Administrative Fellowship Program offers the opportunity to work in an academic environment for twelve months complemented by a career development program. Fellows receive salary and benefits for full time work assignments from September 2015 through August 2016. Fellows also participate in seminars, lectures and case studies designed to enhance leadership and administrative skills, self-assessment and career development.

The Assessment Fellow will:

  • Assist the Harvard Library’s Assessment Librarian foster a culture of assessment within the Harvard Library community and begin establishing a comprehensive, library-wide program of assessment.
  • Perform research into best practices of the assessment programs of other large academic institutions.
  • Identify critical current trends and issues with respect to assessment in academic libraries and higher education.
  • Assist the Assessment Librarian in developing and organizing an assessment community within the Harvard Library including associated supporting committees, working groups and task forces.
  • Assist the Assessment Librarian with developing and implementing a Harvard Library-wide outreach plan.
  • Perform outreach to school libraries, archives, and special collections around assessment topics. 
  • Assist in mapping assessment practices to school and institution level goals and priorities.
  • Research and write reports about collection, management, use, and best practices for library assessment and other data.
  • Conduct on-site and phone interviews of librarians and others at Harvard and elsewhere on topics pertaining to data collection, management, assessment, and use.
  • Liaise with representatives at school libraries, archives, and special collections on topics identifying community needs and competencies related to assessment data and activities.
  • Help to identity tools and processes needed to support ongoing Harvard Library assessment activities, including those that will support community engagement and involvement (e.g. wikis, working groups).

Applicants must have:

  • Bachelor degree
  • At least five years of work experience

Additional experience and skills include:

  • MLIS, MBA and/or MA
  • Interest or experience in library assessment, and/or data analysis
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Project management experience
  • Organizational behavior and/or organizational design experience
  • Strategic thinking
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
