Temporary Project Assistant, Harvard University Library, Cambridge, MA

The Harvard Library is looking for a Temporary Project Assistant for a Mellon grant funded research project to assist with data collecting and collating. Under the supervision of the Study coordinator, the assistant works with various staff members to collect data, runs reports using the library’s reporting software. Communicating with various staff members and using multiple databases, s/he collates data from multiple sources, and provides documentation of the process. This is a 3 month temporary appointment based in the Electronic Resources and Serials section of the Information and Technical Services department.

The project focuses on the investigation of the economic implications of the ‘Article Processing Charge’ (APC) model for funding open access to scholarly journals. One of the key questions is whether a large-scale conversion to open access scholarly journal publishing funded via APCs would be viable and financially sustainable for large North American research-intensive institutions, whose faculty currently author a significant percentage of the world’s research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts database searches
  • Collects and collates data from multiple sources
  • Manipulates large data sets
  • Ensures quality of collected data, verifies, tracks and files collected data
  • Runs queries and generates reports as necessary
  • Works with various staff members in different departments
  • Analyzes data, interprets results and provides written documentation

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education or work experience required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows operating system and Windows software
  • Demonstrated facility with automated systems, including using online databases, working with and manipulating spreadsheets and knowledge of file management techniques
  • Demonstrated experience using technology to perform daily tasks
  • Must have excellent organizational, written communication and analytical skills

Additional Requirements:

  • College degree preferred
  • Library experience, particularly experience in acquisitions or working with serial publications, strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with integrated library systems, particularly Aleph, desirable.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Background and understanding of electronic journal management highly desirable.
  • Knowledge/experience with Cognos, SFX, Verde, Google Refine desirable.
