Director of Technical Services, Brown University, Providence, RI

Brown University Library is seeking a creative, imaginative leader to serve in the newly-created role of Director of Technical Services.  Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Access Services and Collection Management, this position will direct the operations of the Technical Services department, (acquisitions, e-resources, cataloging, and metadata services), leading a staff charged with acquiring, describing, and otherwise providing timely access to information resources for the Brown community.  The Director of Technical Services will be responsible for the review and redesign of workflows and work assignments, with an eye toward increasing efficiencies, bringing more high-quality content to users more quickly, and building sustainable workflows to handle increasingly heterogeneous digital assets.  This position also has direct oversight for the acquisition of materials by purchase, gift, or lease in both tangible and intangible formats and monitors materials expenditures of nearly $12 million (est., FY16) for timely expenditure and accuracy.  S/he will work closely with colleagues to allocate the collections budget, project needs, and manage financial resources responsibly.

The Director of Technical Services will serve on the Access Services senior management team and other library groups as appropriate.  S/he will be expected to mentor staff and support their professional development.  S/he will ensure that departmental activities and priorities align with the strategic directions of the Library and the University and will participate actively in relevant professional organizations and activities. 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Master’s in library science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant (5-7 years) experience in one or more area of materials acquisitions and licensing; broad knowledge of other technical services areas.
  • Significant experience with electronic resource management and licensing.
  • Experience in supervision and management, particularly in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging areas of librarianship, particularly those related to access to scholarly resources.
  • Ability to lead in an atmosphere of continuous change.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-based services.
  • Solid understanding of the research university environment and scholarly communication issues.
