Curation & Preservation Assistant (Temporary/Casual position), MIT Libraries’ Curation & Preservation Services Dept., Cambridge, MA

35 hours/week, scheduled M-F between 8:45 and 4:45

$16/hour without benefits

Starting ASAP and continuing through May 15, 2015 (7 weeks)

The Curation & Preservation Assistant will oversee two production workflows while a permanent staff member is on extended leave.  Duties include:

  • Oversee the shelf preparation workflow. Coordinate with library departments to streamline flow of materials.  Accurately and efficiently complete shelf preparation of circulating materials in all formats (books, journals, DVDS, audiobooks, microfiche, and customized enclosures).  Route materials for delivery to library departments. Maintain statistics.
  • Oversee the commercial binding workflow. Perform data entry and maintain electronic shipment records. Submit invoices for payment.  Pack and unpack shipments. Conduct basic quality assurance on books and journals received from the commercial binder.
  • Address preservation and cataloging issues within the workflows.
  • Assist with coordinating reformatting projects.  Communicate with vendors.  Track materials.  Perform quality control.

Skills required: Manual dexterity, ability to push loaded book truck, ability to lift 40 pounds, attention to detail, comfort with following detailed procedures, demonstrated success sustaining productivity, familiarity with Library of Congress classification, facility with standard office computer programs, flexibility to adapt to changing workflows

Skills preferred: work in an online catalog, familiarity with library workflows, experience in  cataloging or access services.
