Reference and Instruction Librarian (Part-time), University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT

This flexible Librarian works as part of a team of Reference Librarians to provide Reference and Instruction services within a Learning Commons Model of service.  Duties include provision of innovative Reference and Instruction services for students and faculty, monitoring and cultivating the environment of the Library Information Commons, providing backup services for the media delivery function, student I.T. services, and circulation function of the Library, developing resource guide content, testing and monitoring electronic resources, participating in large scale catalog and technical services projects, teaching Information Literacy concepts as a part of the innovative Information Literacy program, and designing web-based tutorials and other related resources. The Reference Services Department supports a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs including distance learning, accelerated adult learner programs, Schools of Education, Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Engineering, Design, Physician Assistant, and Chiropractic Studies.

This librarian works 6 hours a week every week during the Spring Semester but will also be needed as teaching schedule develops on other evenings and weekend days/nights. 

Anticipated schedule:  For the Fall and Spring Semesters:  Sundays 1-4 and Tuesdays 4-7 (Changes may occur for scheduled teaching sessions).

From approximately June 15th – approximately August 15th Monday – Thursday 5:30 PM – 8 PM and 1 Saturday a month.

Future schedules will be available at the beginning of each semester/summer.  Flexibility on weekends and weekday evenings are a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answers Reference and other types of Questions in-person, by telephone, through Instant Messaging, and via email.
  • Works under the guidance of Instruction and Information Literacy Librarian, providing individualized and group instruction on the use of library resources or equipment, including specialized databases
  • Helps to develop instructional material and resources in electronic format
  • Acts as an expert on use of all library databases using each database each week, updating Library staff and publications or tutorials when changes are made
  • Oversees, indirectly, student assistants working in the library and in media services
  • Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning in the Library by enforcing Library policies, especially noise policies
  • Works closely with other Librarians to develop consistent student support and instruction
  • Back Up of Media Services, I.T and Circulation activities during off-peak library hours
  • Keeps library administration informed of patron issues and all off peak activity in the library
  • Other work related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science, some knowledge of Evidence Based Practice and some experience teaching Information Literacy Skills
  • Entry level candidates considered
  • Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office, Library Databases and Internet searching
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and students, including International students
  • Excellent communication skills, including speaking to groups and instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams, be flexible and acquire new skills independently
  • Strong service orientation
