General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Middlesex Community College seeks a self-motivated, service oriented, part-time Library Clerk to work as part of the Library Services team serving students, faculty, staff and community users. The position will be 25 hours per week at the Bedford campus library for the fall and spring semester. The successful candidate will provide circulation and related services and must enjoy working with our diverse library users and library staff to provide exemplary library service.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the librarian with all tasks necessary to opening the library for the day on Saturday and holidays;
  • Use the library’s circulation system to check materials in and out including reserves, ILL, and virtual catalog items. Enter/edit patron information and issue library cards;
  • Print overdue and bill notices and apply blocks in the circulation system. Receive fine money and replacement payments in accordance with college policy.
  • Assist with interlibrary loan duties, complete daily pull list, clear holds shelf, and route library materials to other libraries as needed;
  • Answer phone, route calls, and sort mail. Check the Bedford library email;
  • Provide general assistance and troubleshoot problems with computers, printers and copiers. Fill paper and change toner as needed;
  • Perform routine tasks to help maintain the library in good order;
  • Shelve materials, perform shelf reading. Assist with the annual inventory;
  • Report any building or maintenance issues that need attention to the librarian;
  • Assist the librarian with all tasks necessary to closing the library. Record statistics, maintain records of cash transactions and follow all established library closing procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent. Previous library experience preferred;
  • Ability to maintain a positive service attitude and commitment to working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities;
  • Must be approachable, and able to communicate clearly in a helpful and tactful manner with library staff and users;
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a team setting which includes frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office programs, internet browsers, and printers;
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations for the department; and to interact effectively with a wide variety of individuals from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, race and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities;
  • Bilingual skills a plus.

Additional Information:

Schedule: Part time, non-benefited Support Staff position, 25 hours per week during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Hours: Monday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Salary: $10.00/hour
