Hours:
9-16 hours/week, in 3-4 hour shifts, during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm); may be reduced during holidays, breaks, and initial training period.
Pay: $10.00/hour
The Graduate Student Worker contributes to the work of Beatley Library’s Discovery Services team, which has responsibilities that include acquisitions, cataloging, e-resource management, and information delivery. Initially, the incumbent will work in the area of information delivery, with possible future work in other areas.
General Responsibilities:
- Provide excellent customer service to Beatley Library users and staff and to other libraries
- Fill requests from other libraries for materials from Beatley (interlibrary loan – lending)
- Fill requests from users for materials from other libraries (interlibrary loan – borrowing)
- Fill requests from users for materials from Beatley (document delivery)
- Fill requests from faculty for materials to be placed on course reserve
- Maintain users’ privacy
Specific Duties:
- Use library systems to monitor multiple request queues and process requests
- Search library discovery tools, including catalogs and e-resources
- Search for, create, and update user, resource, and transaction records in library management systems
- Locate and retrieve books and media organized by Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification
- Scan articles and book chapters from print and microform sources
- Send articles and book chapters via secure electronic transmission, cloud storage, email, and fax
- Apply labels and package items for shipment; open packages
- Deliver items to offices on the Simmons campuses
- Communicate questions, suggestions, atypical situations, and user feedback to supervisors
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Enrollment in the Simmons College Library and Information Science program
- Completion of, or enrollment in, LIS 415
- Evidence of strong commitment to excellent customer service
- Ability and comfort with technology
- High level of attention to detail
- Ability to sustain accurate, high-quality work while carrying out repetitive tasks
- Ability to complete time-sensitive tasks while maintaining composure
- Ability to prioritize when faced with multiple tasks
- Ability to understand, remember, and follow complex instructions
- Ability and comfort with making quick decisions based on multiple criteria
- Graduation date of May 2016 or later
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous employment experience
- Experience working or volunteering in libraries
- Familiarity with Atlas Systems’ ILLiad (interlibrary loan software) and Innovative Interfaces, Inc.’s Millennium (integrated library system)
