Head of Collections Management, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT

Middlebury College Library seeks a creative, innovative, and enthusiastic individual for the position of Head of Collections Management. Reporting to the Director of Discovery and Access Services, this position supervises the operations of the Collections Management workgroup, and coordinates collection development activities in support of the College’s curricular, instructional, and research needs. This position also includes some subject liaison duties, with an emphasis on establishing and maintaining open communications with faculty in assigned areas.

Library Collections

  1. Understand the aims and needs of the College’s teaching, learning and research programs through active consultation with faculty, administrators, liaisons, academic technology staff, and others;
  2. Coordinate and guide the selection activities of librarian and faculty selectors within the LIS liaison program and the academic departments/programs to build a strong, balanced, appropriately-scaled Library collection, with a focus on materials needed for curricular use;
  3. With the Electronic Resources Manager & Library Systems Specialist, review, negotiate, and monitor license agreements with database vendors; also monitor and report on usage statistics for electronic journals and databases using vendor reports, the III ERM module, circulation statistics, etc., in order to identify additions and deletions from the Library’s electronic holdings;
  4. Oversee purchasing card approvals; approve Library payments for collection materials;
  5. With the Collections Management staff, monitor and regularly report on the status of the Library materials budget;
  6. With the LIS liaisons and Collections Management staff, lead collection assessment projects as necessary;
  7. With the Preservation Manager, regularly review the Library collection for materials requiring preservation treatment;
  8. With the College Advancement office and Director of Special Collections, develop and regularly assess and revisit the Library’s gift policies and guidelines and serve as a point-of-contact with potential donors;
  9. Pursue collaborative and consortial resource sharing opportunities;
  10. Keep current on new collection development and acquisitions technologies; maintain awareness of national trends and advances in resource sharing, collections management, eResources, and evaluate the potential application of these initiatives to the Libraries services.

Leadership

  1. Serve as supervisor of 5.5 FTE within the Collections Management workgroup;
  2. Oversee staff responsible for the timely and appropriate acquisition of, and access to, new materials;
  3. With the Director of Discovery & Access Services and others, regularly formulate, implement, and assess workgroup and area goals;
  4. With the Director of Discovery & Access Services, oversee the management of a $2.4M library materials budget;
  5. Participate in strategic planning for LIS to coordinate collection building with College initiatives.

Participation in Research and Instructional Activities

  1. Serve as a member of the Library liaison team, functioning as first point of contact for faculty in assigned department(s) and/or First Year Seminar(s). Duties in this capacity may include:
    1. Creation and maintenance of subject and instruction guides and selective bibliographies;
    2. Instruction in the use of library & educational technologies;
    3. Development and teaching of bibliographic instruction classes in support of academic liaison areas, from First Year Seminars through senior seminars;
    4. Consultations to teach research techniques; use of print and online research sources; and basic technology issues such as network storage, filesharing, proxy services, etc.;
    5. Reference service at public service points;
    6. Maintenance of selected Library web pages.
