Head of Young Adult Services, Sunderland Public Library, Sunderland, MA

Duties/Description:

The Sunderland Library seeks a creative person to work closely with area schools to create effective programs for area young adults. Past experience here shows that only cooperative effort will produce good results. This position has 520 hour per year with half as scheduled desk time and the remainder taken as flex time to plan and implement programs. Some Saturday hours required. Position begins April 1, with some hours available immediately.

Young Adult Services

  • Finishes the administration of a $15,000 LSTA Serving Tweens & Teens Grant (to be completed October 2015), including spending and balancing funds, reporting results, etc.
  • Plans and puts on monthly young adult programs for ages 10-18 during the academic year.
  • Works closely with the schools to coordinate services and programs.
  • Plans, advertises and implements the Young Adult Summer Reading Program.
  • Compiles programming statistics.
  • Provides Young Adult reader’s advisory.
  • Works with parents, teachers, school librarians, and other professionals in choosing resources for the Young Adults they serve.
  • Maintains book displays and creates an environment that attracts and invites Young Adults to use the collection.
  • Assists with the creation of public relations materials.
  • Assists with grant preparation. (Example: Local Cultural Council Grants)
  • Oversees two Teen Advisory Boards, meeting 2-3 times a month total.
  • Oversees participation of Young Adults in fundraising and/or other community service activities.

Collection Management/Development

  • Reads book review sources and purchases Young Adult library materials.
  • Assists with weeding.

Circulation Services

  • Staffs the circulation desk.
    1. Checks out/in library materials.
    2. Shelves and shelf-reads library materials.
    3. Processes reserve/hold/ILL requests.
    4. Provides reference services (by telephone and in person).
    5. Answers telephone queries.
    6. Monitors use of the library.
    7. Records patron usage statistics.
    8. Handles patron complaints in absence of Library Director.
    9. Assists patrons in using library technology. (Example: automated “card catalog,” the Internet, word processing software)
    10. Assists patrons in locating library materials.
    11. Registers new patrons.
    12. Collects and records copier/fax fees.
    13. Collects and records monetary donations.
    14. Informs patrons of and enforces library policies.
    15. Supervises/trains volunteers.
    16. Opens/closes the library facility as required.
  • Provides reader’s advisory.
  • Maintains book displays.

Other related duties as required

  • Using Evergreen, enters and deletes bibliographic records in C/W MARS database.
  • Streamlines daily activities/duties/workload.

Qualifications:

Required: Experience with and genuine enjoyment of working with Young Adults; knowledge of Young Adult literature; ability to plan and implement Young Adult activities with regard to developmental levels; demonstrated understanding of Young Adult developmental issues; enthusiasm, energy, accuracy, organization and service-orientation; ability to work well with patrons of diverse ages and ethnicities; ability to learn and use basic reference techniques; willingness and ability to learn new library procedures; ability to work independently and adapt to a fast-paced work environment; ability to supervise volunteers; computer literacy; commitment to ongoing professional development; dependability and flexibility with regard to hours; high school diploma.

Desirable: Library experience; experience using Evergreen or other automated library system; Basic Library Techniques Training courses; BA/BS.

Salary:

$13.82/hr.
