Temporary Research Services Assistant, Harvard Law School, Cambridge, MA

Duties & Responsibilities             

*This position is coverage for a maternity leave and could extend through early April, 2015.*

Under direction of the Manager, Research Services, this temporary position provides support for research, information delivery, and publication services.  Duties include working alongside research librarians to provide reference assistance to users, maintaining files and statistics, assisting research librarians with special projects, assisting the document delivery unit, supporting scholarly communications, and assisting with scheduling and promoting library events.  Responsible for interpreting and implementing policies and procedures with regard to the level of research service provided to various patrons, deciding whether s/he is the appropriate person to carry out the research or whether to refer the patron to a research librarian, or other member of the staff. This is a term appointed position, currently expected to continue for one year, subject to departmental need and funding.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Support research librarians at the reference desk by assisting patrons and monitoring virtual reference
  • Provide administrative support to professional staff to include on projects as well as photocopying, filing, and other general office tasks
  • Maintain files, records, and statistics of the department
  • Assist in the maintenance of web pages and research guides
  • Schedule and facilitate sign-ups for tours and classes offered by the department
  • Promote and advertise department services and events
  • Shelve reference books and maintain vertical file
  • Monitor department email and respond or refer as appropriate
  • Assist FRIDA as needed with the search and retrieval of faculty requested items

Additional responsibilities:

  • Participate in orientation and training for new reference department staff
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as required

Basic Qualifications         

  • Previous library or related work experience required
  • Previous legal or law library experience preferred

Additional Qualifications              

  • BA/BS  preferred
  • Strong customer service orientation; excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Competency on broad range of computer technologies to include online research
  • Prefer experience with content management system, HTML and Lexis/Westlaw
