Associate Curator of the Yale Babylonian Collection, Yale University, New Haven, CT

General Purpose: The Associate Curator is responsible for oversight of the Yale Babylonian Collection of tablets, seals, art objects, as well as drawings and photographs. Responsible for the presentation of the permanent collection to the public, and for access to the Collection through exhibitions, installations, publications, tours and lectures. Oversees the care, orderly storage and cataloging of the Collection. Formulates and implements a strategy for developing the collection of tablets, seals and art through acquisitions. Formulates, develops and implements conservation and preservation treatments, programs and policies. Conducts in-depth research into the Collection using original source materials. Responsible for assessing objects requested for study, research or loan exhibition. Oversees and is responsible for the Collection budget. Acquires scholarly manuscripts for collection series of publications. Coordinates and monitors all phases of multiple publishing projects, including preparation, editing, designing, estimating and in general overseeing the process of publication from manuscript to published work. Oversees and maintains the Collection library of series, monographs, journals and reprints. Maintains the Collection web site.

Required Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in Art History and four years of curatorial experience or an equivalent education and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with professional museum collection practices, including technical expertise in conservation.
  • Ability to research and write collection catalogues and publications, as well as grant proposals and reports.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; demonstrated ability to multitask with competing priorities.
  • Preferred: A minimum of five years of museum curatorial experience. A degree in Assyriology or Archaeology. Proficiency in modern and ancient languages.
