Community Relations and Communications Manager (part-time), Worcester Public Library, Worcester, MA

Part-Time (20-32 hours a week)

Salary: $24,596.00 – $50,419.20 annually; $23.65 – $30.30 hourly

This is a part-time position under the direction of the Associate Head Librarian. The individual in this role serves as the community liaison and communications expert for the library. Oversees communications activities and products to enhance overall internal and external relations to create broad-based community awareness of the Worcester Public Library and its programs, resources, and facilities.

Essential Job Functions:

Community Relations

  • Develops strong community partnerships with appropriate community agencies, City Administration, Worcester Public School Department offices, and library sponsors
  • Cultivates and manages relationships with area universities and libraries
  • Interacts frequently with a broad range of people both in individual or group settings within the library structure, with the general public, the news media, or with other public and private agencies

Communications

  • Develops, produces, and promotes public information materials, signage, social media, and monthly newsletter that contribute to staff and public awareness of Library services and enhance public opinion of WPL in coordination with library staff
  • Manages the library’s web page from an editorial standpoint as Chair of the Library Web Site Committee, coordinating technical details with the library Network Manager
  • Plans, develops, and performs advertising and promotion activities to ensure high-quality materials are delivered on time and on budget using standard library branding
  • Maintains positive working relationships with local news media
  • Coordinates activities and fosters relationships among library staff to ensure outreach and messages are consistent, timely, and effective

General

  • Participates in and contributes to library management groups at strategic level
  • Participates in various committees
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, consistent with the functions of the work unit and level of responsibility

Minimum Job Qualification Standards for Performing

Essential Job Functions:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of web site management
  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in current and emerging technologies and their applications, experience using MS office suite, publishing and graphics programs
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and functions of a public library
  • Ability and willingness to assume responsibility
  • Ability to organize, direct, and coordinate the work of others
  • Ability to travel on a limited basis

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience in community or public relations, public information, print production, or a related field

Schedule: Includes evening and weekend assignments and working at other locations

Travel: Ability to get to other locations in a timely manner. A valid driver’s license is required
