Library Assistant – Serials Cataloging Project

Job summary: Under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian, the Library Assistant is responsible for implementing the serials module in Koha (the Library’s ILS) and cataloging at least 100 serials titles, including dead runs as well as current subscriptions. The initial project focus is on serials in the subjects of art, architecture, American history, and American culture.  The Cataloger is expected to adhere to national standards as well as local practice.

 

This is a full-time temporary job budgeted for 35 hours/week for 15 weeks with no option for extension. Pay rate is $17 per hour, with no benefits. All work must be completed by September 26. Funding for this position has been provided through a Library of Rhode Island Grant from the RI Office of Library and Information Services using funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Implement the serials module in Koha in collaboration with the Technical Services Librarian.
  • Modify or create MARC records for serials, with notes on specific holdings.
  • Communicate with Technical Services Librarian regarding local cataloging practices.
  • Document the new procedure for cataloging serials.
  • Document the new procedure for processing individual issues of current subscriptions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and coursework toward a Master’s of Library Science. Must have completed at least a basic cataloging course.
  • Understanding of AACR2 and MARC format as well as Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Knowledge of computer technology, databases, and Internet-based products and services.
  • Familiarity with OCLC Connexion.
  • Strict attention to detail.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and other employees.

 

Work is performed in a library/historic site environment. There is exposure to dust, mold, cleaning solutions, and solvents. The work involves standing, stooping, walking, and some physical effort to lift and move serials.
